This was probably the first Elton album that has a commercial sound throughout it. I have always felt that this album is not that good in it's era though.
And into the track reviews. "Honky Cat" I've heard is in a hard key. It is quite joyous, playful song, but not one of the best hits of Elton's. "Mellow" was declared a favorite of Elton's - don't know why, I don't think it's very good, as it irritates. "I Think I'm Going To Kill Myself" is a fun song, if the music wasn't fun then I probably would hate it, have to admit. Then we come to "Susie (Dramas)", which is acknowledged as one of the weaker songs on the album, is truly not that great. "Rocket Man" ends side one, and it's a brilliant end to that indeed. The song is really smooth and cool. Side two starts with "Salvation", one of my favorite tracks here. It really gets lots of energy in the end, although the song is not a rocker and it's not fast. "Slave" is probably the weakest here. It just doesn't quite work, although it's better as slow than fast. One of the sleeper songs is "Amy" to me. That's fun, somehow. Before the closer, we get to "Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters", which has been a favorite for me for a long, long time. I slightly dislike the message of the lyrics - "the rich man can thrive, and the hobo he can drown" - does it really have to be that way? That in connection with the wonderful music makes it sound like NYC is wonderful, which it really isn't according to these lyrics. "Hercules", a soft rocker, ends the album. I like it more in GYBR deluxe edition live concert.
Only one bonus track here, which is "Slave" as fast, and like I said already it doesn't work.
