With DSM Elton went clearly with a pop sound.
This album has been a favorite of mine for a long time, and many songs really shine bright!
First we've got "Daniel". I've always liked it a lot, although the story isn't quite clear as one of the verses was removed. "Teacher I Need You" is an uptempo number, it's happy and fun. "Elderberry Wine" rocks. "Blues For My Baby And Me" is another ballad, and I like it equally with "Daniel". "Blues..." just takes a little longer to like, as it's not that tight package and it's quite a long track. "Midnight Creeper" is a filler, but I like that filler! "Have Mercy On The Criminal" is dramatic, but it took longer to really like it unlike the other songs. Then we've got "I'm Going To Be A Teenage Idol", which quite well reflects to Elton's life at that point. I don't like it as much as the other tracks. "Texan Love Song" used to be a filler too but it has grown on me. The lyrics are fun, and true! Then we've got the lead single, which is a pop anthem. I guess no words are needed to describe why I love it (more than these). And finally "High Flying Bird", my favorite from the album, is supposed to be about a broken relationship. Love the music, it's so wistful!
Then a few words about the bonus tracks: "Screw You (Young Man's Blues)" is a long time favorite of mine, it's fun. "Jack Rabbit" is short, but fun too. "Whenever You're Ready" is a great uptempo number. And finally "Skyline Pigeon" piano version, which is a fantastic remake of the version on Empty Sky, although I like the older one more.
