This is currently my number three of Elton albums. A brilliant collection of songs that should have been made into a studio album in the late 70's.
The first song is "Nice And Slow". I've always thought it's one of the gems in this one, although most fans don't appreciate it. Yes, the song structure may irritate, but for me it don't. "Country Love Song" is the weakest one for me in this album. It's got a great mood, but the lyrics don't appeal to me and it's not ambitious musically. "Shine On Through" is an interesting song musically, especially when compared to the version on A Single Man. The version on ASM is pop/AC but the one here is soul/gospel. I don't care about the outro - goes on too long - and the version on ASM has better arrangement to me. Well, then we have "Mama Can't Buy You Love", the hit from the album. That's a brilliant song, lyrics are nice, and it's very catchy. "Are You Ready For Love?" is even better - it's got The Spinners on lead vocals along with Elton, which gives extra kick for it. I think the song has all elements of a hit song, especially when it was cut to below four minutes, and that was proved with Ashley Beedle's remix, which went to no. 1 in the UK. The final track, "Three Way Love Affair", is yet one more winner from the album. Lyrically, it's not that strong to me but musically it is.
1. Nice And Slow *****+
2. Country Love Song ***½
3. Shine On Through *****
4. Mama Can't Buy You Love *****+
5. Are You Ready For Love? [With The Spinners] *****++
6. Three Way Love Affair *****
