As we often think of what could be Elton's best album, we also sometimes think what's the worst, and I think this one's got the ingredients for that.
First, the songs are not composed by Elton, and secondly, the album is disco. Those are the two main reasons why fans dislike this album, IMO. Another regular studio album could've been a lot better choice to do, but Elton chose to record a disco album because it was fashionable during that period.
This album includes some of Elton's worst songs of all-time.
The biggest loser is "Johnny B. Goode", to me. The original song is brilliant, but this remake certainly doesn't work at all - it really sounds lousy, and Elton's vocals are terrible. "Warm Love In A Cold World" is better, but not much. Musically, it just doesn't work. Lyrics are fine, but that doesn't help as both need to be good. The track number three, "Born Bad", is where things were done well, IMO. It's catchy and I like that. "Thunder In The Night" is another fine song to me. "Spotlight" is weak though, it isn't catchy and rather irritates. "Street Boogie" is about the same, although it's very slightly better. The final track, "Victim Of Love", is the best here, and it was released as a single.
1. Johnny B. Goode * 2. Warm Love In A Cold World **½ 3. Born Bad ****½ 4. Thunder In The Night **** 5. Spotlight ** 6. Street Boogie **½ 7. Victim Of Love *****
