Elton's first album of the eighties, and at this point it was clear that Elton wasn't one of the top artists anymore. Others like Michael Jackson were flourishing, but Elton deteriorated.
The album starts with "Chasing The Crown". It is an uptempo rocker that has nice energy. The lead single was "Little Jeannie", which is really beautiful, slow ballad. "Sartorial Eloquence" is similar, but somewhat weaker. The closer of side one is "Two Rooms At The End Of The World", and it has a good verse which gets repeated too many times though. Elton should have composed a chorus for the song. The starter of the 2nd side, "White Lady White Powder", is my favorite from the album. The lyrics for it are not commercial though, but the music is the reason why I'm attracted to it. "Dear God" is the weakest here, the lyrics are desperate, mediocre, but mainly it's the music why I don't like the song. Then we've got "Never Gonna Fall In Love", which got a mood I love, although the song itself isn't very ambitious. Same with "Take Me Back", except that has some country wibe. The closer of the album "Give Me The Love", used to be a weak song for me but now I like it more.
1. Chasing The Crown ****½
2. Little Jeannie *****+
3. Sartorial Eloquence (Don't Ya Wanna Play This Game No More?) *****
4. Two Rooms At The End Of The World ***½
5. White Lady White Powder *****+
6. Dear God **½
7. Never Gonna Fall In Love Again ****½
8. Take Me Back *****
9. Give Me The Love ****
