I'm almost halfway through Elton's autobiography entitled "Me". I highly recommend it. He relates things in a manner that will not only inform, but entertain you as well. Elton's sense of humor, self-deprecating and deadpan, has had me laughing along on virtually every page.
A few highlights:
He saw a balloon promoting Rod Stewart's concert. He called his management, and they arranged to have it shot down. Stewart, of course, got him back.
Dick James' choice to release I've Been Loving You: 'he scoured our catalog and found the most boring song'.
Philips record label's refusal to back an album: 'for some inexplicable reason, they didn't want to back an album by an artist who did nothing but lose money for them'

IBLY is not a wonder being a single release. There are not many commercial songs in their early catalog but that one, and perhaps "It's Me That You Need". The problem with these songs is that they're not special in any way.

ME by Elton John:
This is a surprisingly good book. Elton highlights the key people in his life. John Lennon and Gianni Versace both get lengthy touching parts. Elton honours their energy and memory fittingly. Elton also highlights the role his Mother made in his life; a role which changed over time, sadly. John Reid also gets extended coverage as does David Furnish. The book covers some musical highlights (Troubadour, Dodgers Stadium, USSR in 1979, and so on) but the book actually doesn't go into much depth about the songs or the recording of the songs. Too bad; it would have been nice to have a bit more insight about the music which is, after all, why most or all of us are now reading the book. The book has some interesting facts that clear up some things that have long been wrongly considered. The story behind the name of Elton's first son Zachary, for example, is interesting. Zachary's middle name "Levon" actually has nothing to do with the song or a certain musician. A touching story and this is what makes the book shine - stories like this. It was incredible to read how close to death Elton came due to health crises in recent years. No wonder he looks at life differently these days.
