In 2018 a book by David John DeCouto called CAPTAIN FANTASTIC: THE DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY OF ELTON JOHN IN THE '70s was released.
I bought this book on Amazon ($23) in December and have to say that if you are interested in Elton's "music" then this book will most likely exceed expectations. It is a whopping 800+ pages of text with a few select photos. It covers Elton's music from 1970 to 1979 - also tipping its toe into 1969 and 1980. The book contains countless quotes from Elton, Bernie, Nigel, Dee, Davey, Ray, Caleb, Gary Osborne, Gus and everybody else that you could imagine that was involved in Elton's music in that incredible decade of classic Elton music.
The stories are incredible. If you want to know why Gus woke Elton (an early riser) very early to do his vocal the day after recording the song (in only 2 takes) then check out the book. The great thing about this book is that it delves deeper into Elton's music than any other book that I have seen. TIN PAN ALLEY: THE RISE OF ELTON JOHN by Keith Hayward does an equally superb job writing about Elton and his musical origins and adventures up to 1969's EMPTY SKY album. This David John DeCouto book covers every Elton album and literally every released (and some not released) song they did. The recent successful autobiography ME is entertaining and personal but CAPTAIN FANTASTIC: THE DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY OF ELTON JOHN IN THE '70s offers a much deeper examination of the music. It also covers Elton outside of music.
Highly recommended book!
