Elton's DIAMONDS album had a banner year in 2019. I figured we could track any albums & singles on the charts for 2020 right here:
On the good news front:
* DIAMONDS jumped to #4 on Australia's Top 100 Album Chart this week (January 20, 2020) - #13 on the New Zealand album chart - #18 on the UK album chart. * GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD re-entered at #47 on Australia's Top 100 Album Chart as well.

Elton's DIAMONDS hits album just became certified "Platinum" status - one million copies sold in the US on March 4, 2020.
In the age of downloading and not paying for music, album sales are far from what they used to be. DIAMONDS is already 3X Platinum in New Zealand and edging towards 4X while the album is approaching 2X Platinum in Australia, and is Platinum in Canada and the UK. DIAMONDS has been hanging around the top 5 in both New Zealand and Australia during his FAREWELL tour for the past 3 to 4 months.

Thanks DougS,
I did not expect the album to perform as well as it has, since Elton has released numerous compilations over the years. It's nice to see that it's exceeded my expectations.

Yeah, it only did "OK" when it first came out in late 2017. It charted well in the UK at the time. Then with the FAREWELL tour and, especially, the film "Rocketman" it did quite well. The tour in Australia & New Zealand pushed it to a top 3 position. It has been getting lots of Platinum and multi-Platinum certifications in recent months. I'm seeing people, especially younger people, who really didn't know his music start to listen to him for the first time.

It is actually confusing that Elton is doing so well. Where are The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson and Madonna? I'd think they are all more popular than Elton.

BiteUrLip:
As we know, Elton came racing back into people's consciousness' in recent years because of his highly successful FAREWELL tour and "Rocketman" movie. On top of that, the film really seemed to introduce EJ to a younger (under 30) audience who are discovering his music for the first time. I recently watched a mid-20s guy on YouTube who didn't know what Elton looked like (originally mistook him for Guy Babylon) review the live 1995 in Rio version of "Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding". He had never heard the song (studio or live) and was blown away! I saw another YouTube music program by someone about 50 years of age who had never given Elton's music a fair chance in the past until recently when he listened to and reviewed CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY. He, too, was amazed by every single song on the record and raved about it. In recent years Elton has had lots of positive media coverage plus DIAMONDS is a decent hits package and the hits are always the go-to for most fans which partly explains the album's success.
You mention lots of classic artists like Elvis, Dylan and The Beatles, etc: you will be amazed to learn that some established veteran acts like Fleetwood Mac are still high on the charts. Fleetwood Mac's RUMOURS album just won't go away! Understandable - it still sounds great. It is currently #16 on the UK Top 100 Albums chart and their most recent 50 YEARS hits package is #11. Queen's GREATEST HITS is #13, Bob Marley's LEGEND hits package is #15, and Abba's GREATEST HITS is #17. The Beatles' 1 hits package is #27 and Bowie's recent LEGACY hits package is #30.
The charts are filled with mostly new music; both 1975 and KSI are atop (#1, #2) the UK Top 100 Albums chart (Lady Gaga will likely be #1 next week) but lots of established acts, like Elton, have their most popular studio albums or hits packages on the charts these days. Elton's DIAMONDS didn't do particularly well when it came out in late 2017. It had a few top 10 positions in certain countries but slipped away relatively quickly after a number of weeks. The tour and, especially, the movie brought it roaring back to much higher chart positions and it hasn't gone away. DIAMONDS has begun to achieve both Platinum and Multi-Platinum certification in more & more countries.

Pretty good for Elton, Shows how bad todays music is when an album put out 3 or 4 years ago is still charting.

DIAMONDS - updated October 3, 2020:
There is a photo of EJ with his new large "double-platinum" certification for DIAMONDS for the UK. The statement that goes along with the photo says that DIAMONDS is the #8 selling album on the Top 100 UK Albums Chart so far for 2020.
The album remains at #16 in Australia and #20 in New Zealand for this week. Not bad when you consider that DIAMONDS came out 3 years ago next month...
