This album doesn't have very good reputation among fans, and yes, we've gone worse since 2L4Z and Breaking Hearts.
"This Town" opens, and it is an aggressive pop song with great energy. "Cry To Heaven" is very melancholic, both musically and lyrically. "Soul Glove" comes next, and I love the mood in this one. Then we have the big hit "Nikita", and that's the best what this album can offer. It doesn't have a great hook, but it's beautiful. "Too Young" ends the side one, and that song basically has everything to be a great song, but somehow it feels too overblown. The side two opens up with "Wrap Her Up", and that's fun. The next song, "Satellite", feels groovy. The quality starts to drop towards the end of the album, and the following song "Tell Me What The Papers Say" is basically just a nice song. Same with "Candy By The Pound", except it's worse. Finally we have "Shoot Down The Moon", which is similar to "Cry To Heaven".
Then to bonus tracks: "Act Of War" is an A-side with a poor reputation, and I give it only four stars here. It can irritate sometimes. "The Man Who Never Died" on the other hand is a very beautiful instrumental, and I like it more than "Song For Guy". Then we have three live numbers, first one is "Restless" - and it is faster and more aggressive piano playing by Elton, making it better than the album version. The second number is "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word", which is about equally good with the album version. What about "I'm Still Standing" then? I think it's far weaker than the album version, and I seriously dislike the way Elton sings it.
