Music: Elton John
Lyrics: Bernie Taupin
piano and vocals: Elton John
guitar: Davey Johnstone
guitar: John Jorgenson
bass: Bob Birch
keyboards: Guy Babylon
drums and percussion: Charlie Morgan
And when we start we say forever
We say we care, we need, we feel
We read the movement of our eyes
But in our hearts we still believe
The end will come, before we know
The silent rule of love applies
We light the fuse and let it burn out
We just accept that love must die
chorus:
And so they say, the end will come for us
And so the world slows down to let us off
Just hang it up and let it go, accept it if I must
But I don't believe, I don't believe that the end will come for us
No I won't believe the end will come for us
The end will come like sudden rain
The end is never what it seems
We sink the ship before we sail
We just accept what failure means
(repeat chorus)
(repeat chorus)

The melody in this song doesn't work properly to me - it disappoints.
3½ stars.

"The End Will Come" from THE BIG PICTURE:
Elton & Bernie released an album of songs written mostly about relationships in 1997 called THE BIG PICTURE. "The End Will Come" is an interesting track that has an darkness to it. The song incorporates some jazz-folk in the chorus of the song. The song also features a strong EJ piano solo as do many songs on the album. This song, I feel, could excel in a wide range of genres. It could be given a hard rock treatment, a jazz treatment, or done softly & gently and would be interesting. Some great lines from Bernie in this one. An overlooked track.
Rating: 4 to 4 1/2 stars

nix: sometimes I think about what to give as a vote. You'll notice that I occasionally give a range (4 to 4 1/2) and reflect on my vote # for a day or so. This is the case with "The End Will Come." Not to worry, a vote will eventually appear.
Rating: 4 1/2 stars

5 stars...One of Elton's better 1990's offerings, an often overlooked song, as DougS pointed out, but that merits attention. Lyrically interesting too, as Bernie mines the experience of many romances, starting out well, but eventually running into difficulty, and yet are still hopeful, whether blindly or not, as a musically powerful chorus drives home the point.
