Writer: Kiki Dee
piano and vocals: Elton John
You're a stranger to me
Then you give me your life
I toss it to one side
Still you're sweeter to me
When will I be sure
It's warm where you are
But my lips just don't burn
I feel so insecure
When you try to be kind
Could I ask for more
Looking at you now I know you only want to find me
Still I need a reason to leave the past behind me
Behind me
There ain't no easy way
To learn how to fly
I hope that I can care
When I turn around you're there
Should I ask for more
I feel like sugar on the floor
I feel like sugar on the floor
Looking at you now I know you only want to find me
Still I need a reason to leave the past behind me
Behind me
There ain't no easy way, there ain't no easy way
To learn how to fly
I hope that I can care
When I turn around you're there
Should I ask for more
I feel like sugar on the floor
I feel like sugar on the floor

"Sugar on the Floor" - a B-side to "Island Girl":
"Sugar on the Floor" was one of the first two songs that Kiki Dee had written. Elton supported Kiki on her version on her 1973 album LOVING AND FREE. Elton revisited the song during the ROCK OF THE WESTIES sessions in the summer of 1975. Vocally, EJ sounded, at times, like Ray Charles in this spare emotional ballad version. As good as this song is, EJ had decided at some point that ROCK OF THE WESTIES was going to feature more raw and rocking songs featuring his new band. The ROCK OF THE WESTIES SESSIONS actually produced lots of ballads (eg. "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" and "Tonight" and "Cage the Songbird") none of which made it to the album. Many of these songs would surface on 1976's BLUE MOVES album.
"Sugar on the Floor" aside from being the B-side for "Island Girl" in 1975 it also appeared on Elton's RARE MASTERS album in 1992-93. Even his B-sides were impressive.
Rating: 4 to 4 1/2 stars

4 stars...a nice little bonus track which, along with Planes, gives the fan a better feel for what really went into the Westies sessions - they were not all rock plus "Robert Ford' after all. Sugar is fairly soulful, and while it doesn't rise up to the standard of some of Elton's better piano-only melodies, it's pleasant enough.

Boring song. Kiki Dees version is better.

The popularity of this one is a bit baffling to me. Just not my kind of thing I guess.
