Pretty interesting live recording, I like the simple intro. But this is not one of my favorite versions of this song.
4½ stars.

"Take Me To The Pilot" from HERE AND THERE:
Elton released the live HERE AND THERE album in 1976 featuring slightly dated performances from 1974. The "Here" side is from London and the "There" side is from New York. That New York concert was the famous one on Thanksgiving Day on which John Lennon joined Elton and the band onstage for 3 songs and then later in the concert to finish off the legendary show. This was Lennon's last-ever concert performance. "Take Me To The Pilot" features a rocking version opened with a great extended intro vocal from Elton over a slow rising energy-building performance by EJ and the band. This vocal performance is one of the highlights of the song. Davey's electric guitar solo (replacing studio album strings) and extended performance on the outro are a pleasure to hear. Ray's percussion adds quite nicely to the song. Live concert technology has improved greatly since the early 70s but this remains a strong version (5 stars) with fairly good overall sound. The song clocks in around 5:40 compared to the studio version of 3:48.
Always a good to very good song live, EJ has played "Take Me To The Pilot" consistently in concert whether his shows be solo, with Ray Cooper, or with a band. It has been played at least once for 35 years since 1970 and almost non-stop during this millennium. It is in the FAREWELL setlist as well. Some might say that it could or should be retired and another album track find its way into the setlist...
Rating: 4 1/2 to 5 stars

4.5 stars...An interesting version of this song, a staple, as Doug S mentioned, in Elton's live catalog - it actually makes an appearance on the "Here" side of the disc as well, though in my view, this rendition is the better of the two.
