Music: Elton John
Lyrics: Bernie Taupin
Well he looks through the wreckage
But he can't find a photo of you
Then he ties me in knots
With riddles he chooses to use
And he says how come you two
Are the only ones here who survived
Oh I thought it was me
Who was destined to be
The lord of the flies
And who rules when fools leave, I do
Says the lord of the flies
Leave me your world, give me your earth
Swallow your foolish pride
And don't think I'm wrong, it's here I belong
It's mine, I'm the lord of the flies
Lord of the flies
Lord of the flies
Then take all the money you want
It's the last thing we used for fuel
Here in the late great capital
We burned a bonfire for you
He knows we burned the harvest
And saw through his disguise
He's no phantom at all
He's the only thing left
The lord of the flies

It's a weird, fun song but I have never really liked much of it. It's the music, I don't like this type of tune.
3½ stars.

"Lord of the Flies" - Outtake from LEATHER JACKETS:
One of the outtakes from one of Elton's worst albums, LEATHER JACKETS, is "Lord of the Flies." The song managed to find itself released as the B-side to the UK 12" vinyl EP release of "Slow Rivers" - the song Elton did with legendary Cliff Richards for LEATHER JACKETS. The song has a bit of a Dixie flavour to it and has a prominent bass line probably from David Paton or possibly Paul Westwood. The song may be better than some of the tracks which actually made it to the 1986 LEATHER JACKETS release but that still isn't saying too much. Elton described himself as "not a well budgie" at this time and, sadly, it showed.
Rating: 3 to 3 1/2 stars

3.5 stars...My point rating for this song is in keeping with much of the Leather Jackets album, which contains little in the way of truly compelling music, though I think there's entertainment value to be had. Elton had violated his long standing rule of not allowing drug use in the studio, and if not so near-tragic a situation, it would be somewhat funny, as Gus Dudgeon for instance related that Elton would show up to record with powder on his face as he indulged in what by that time was a raging cocaine addiction. The results were predictably uneven, if not downright unlistenable. But at the same time, I personally have always been weirdly fascinated by this record, as if straining to find some good in it. It's almost like watching a bad sports team with the hope of seeing at least a glimmer of hope, or at least resilience. In a way, there is an oddly engaging quality about it, just as there is with this album.

Kind of a different fun song. Should have been on the album, There are worse songs on the album that made the album.Would have been a good replacement for I Fall Apart or Memory of Love.
4 stars

5 one of his most perfect melodies and fun to listen to... some similarities with 'and the house fell down'.

Good. I was always pleased when this would pop up on my B side tape. Does it mean anything?
