Come back baby
Come back to me yeah
And you will see yeah
How I've changed
'Cause you're the only love that I ever had
You're the only love that I ever had
Come back to me
Come back baby
I did you wrong yeah
And this is the song I sing
I hope will bring you back to me
'Cause you're the only love that I ever knew
You're the only love that I ever knew
Come back come back
Come back baby
Come back and treat me right
Come back baby
Come on back, I'll hold you tight
Come back baby
Come back I'll treat you right
Come back baby
Come on back
Come back and hold me tight
Come back baby
Everything's gonna be fine right now
It's gonna be fine right now
It's gonna be fine right now
'Cause you're the only love that I ever had
Yeah you're coming back and I'm so glad
You're coming back to me

The tune is pretty good, but the lyrics... just seem to be there so that the vocalist would have something to sing. I don't know why but I feel Elton could have been a great lyricist, too. He would have just needed more self-esteem. Maybe not telling epic stories like Bernie but he could have provided some meaningful lyrics like "Border Song" proved.
4 stars.

3.5 stars...A decent, fairly catchy early tune, if nothing more than a glimpse at the formative years of what would become a superstar career. Recorded in 1965 by Bluesology (Pre-Baldry), a group formed by Reg and Corvettes bandmate Stewart Brown after the Corvettes broke up, the production is sub-par, but listenable. Lyrically, well, thankfully, Bernie Taupin came along. Elton was able to write nice melodies to his rather unpolished lyrics, such as with I've Been Loving You, recorded three years later.

"Come Back Baby" - 1965 single from Bluesology and on TO BE CONTINUED:
Reg Dwight, as EJ was still named in 1965, released his first single under the name of his current band, Bluesology. Elton wrote the music and the lyrics for the song. Elton played piano. The song is lyrically quite unsubstantial and musically it is, at least, promising. The band, due to their live demand, added trumpet and sax to their line-up and this comes through on "Come Back Baby."
Apparently, the session that "Come Back Baby" was recorded (June, 1965) took 3 hours and had Elton take over vocal duties from Stuart Brown due to the song's key being better suited to Elton's higher register. It is a predictable middle of the road ballad.
It must have been incredibly exciting for the young Elton to release this song. About a decade later Elton stated "I can remember sitting in the car and hearing the record...and saying, 'Hey, that's me singing, folks!'"
A bit more on "Come Back Baby"...years later Elton, now a successful musician, described the song as "beyond dreadful!." EJ went on to say "...that was our first record, and we were real proud of it, but when you look back on it, it was a moronic song." The truth is, we all have to start somewhere and for EJ "Come Back Baby" was his first professional release - way back in 1965.
"Come Back Baby" was generously included in Elton's big package TO BE CONTINUED released in 1990-91. "Come Back Baby" was recently re-issued on Universal-Fontana (Fontana was the 1965 label) in April, 2016 as a 7" vinyl single and is still available on Amazon and possibly elsewhere. Pretty cool for collectors.

A collector would want the original.
Not good, but has that nugget of ... something.
