"Carla/Etude" from THE FOX:
By 1981 Elton was changing record companies. He had grown frustrated with MCA and switched to Geffen Records. THE FOX was EJ's first release on Geffen. What EJ brought to the record were primarily existing songs from the 21 AT 33 sessions. Six of the 21 AT 33 outtakes made it onto 1981's THE FOX release including "Carla/Etude." Geffen, incidentally, wasn't happy with the entire collection presented to him and suggested that EJ return to the studio and write some new songs with a new producer (Chris Thomas) to go with the better songs from the 21 AT 33 outtakes. "Carla/Etude" and the other 21 AT 33 outtakes were produced by Elton and Clive Franks. "Carla/Etude" is an instrumental (2 songs, actually) featuring Elton on piano with the London Symphony Orchestra arranged and conducted by James Newton Howard. This is a stunning melancholy combination of two songs which were combined with the electronic instrumental "Fanfare" and the jazz-influenced "Chloe" to make a 4-song suite on the album.
Elton apparently wrote "Carla" and "Etude" separately but combined them as one. The piano & orchestra combination brings back memories of the epic "Tonight" from 1976's BLUE MOVES album. Elton first played this live in 1986 with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for his famous Australia concerts. In most of his solo shows thereafter, EJ combined "Carla/Etude" with "Tonight" as a great centrepiece for those shows. The song was played every year between 1999 and 2005 and again between 2007 and 2010. A beautiful piece of work. It is the most played song live in concert than any other from THE FOX.

This is one of Elton's best instrumentals, without doubt.

In 1981, there was a report he was working on a classical album. This is all that came of it. Too bad...
If Carla and Etude are two pieces of music, I can't tell where one starts and the other begins.
