"Rocket Man" - LIVE IN MOSCOW:
In 1979 Elton became one of the first major rock stars to travel behind "the iron curtain." It was huge news to have a "western" musician play a rock concert on the east side - in other words, the USSR. The concerts received massive media exposure and portions of it were released on video and eventually on DVD as TO RUSSIA WITH ELTON. It was Elton solo for half of the concert and then Ray Cooper appeared through the dry-ice fog during "Funeral For A Friend" for the remainder of the concert. In 2019, one of the Moscow concerts was released on RECORD STORE DAY 2019 on double vinyl and then eventually later in the year it was released digitally. "Rocket Man" was performed solo before Ray appeared.
As 1979 progressed, Elton hit the USA and Canada with his BACK IN THE USSA tour and "Rocket Man" appeared much as it did in the Moscow and Leningrad concerts. The normally 4 1/2 minute song was extended to 7 1/2 minutes in Moscow & Leningrad and received even lengthier renditions as the tour progressed often reaching upwards of 10 minutes. Elton's voice is elastic and playful and mournful in these 1979 versions. He hits the high notes. There is emotion in the performances. You felt it in the auditorium as Elton took the listener from quiet lows to emotional highs. He sounds lonely, which is of course part of the meaning of the song. This was magical. It is a performance like this that elevates Elton to that of a premier live performer.
For another version from 1979; check his Boston concert in October of that year on YouTube.
Rating: 5 1/2 stars
