Music: Elton John
Lyrics: Bernie Taupin
I fell in love with you one September
Between the ashes and the dying embers
What happened to our dreams
Nothing so it seems
But I fell in love with you
Remember
If the phone forgets to ring this evening
And I'm left dazed and gazing at the ceiling
Be sure to understand
The future's in your hands
'Cause I'm still in love with you
Remember
I've loved enough to know
When I'm without a reason in hand
Oh there's little doubt
I've loved enough to be sure
I've loved enough to know the reason has gone
There's little doubt the season has gone
When I was young and so secure
I wrote to you of romance made in heaven
My words were touched with guilt, my sentences uneven
What happened to the line
I repeated time and time
I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love with you
I'm still in love with you
Remember, remember

"Remember" - an outtake (?) demo from 1977:
Elton and Bernie penned a song called "Remember" in 1977. What prompted the song was was the performance of "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" by Frank Sinatra at his Royal Albert Hall concert in London in 1977. Frank played the song in several concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in March of 1977. Sinatra asked Elton & Bernie, who were in the audience one night, to take a bow after which Elton said "I nearly died" due to being singled out by someone of the fame & stature of Sinatra. Frank had introduced "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" by saying "Here's an interesting song, fairly new, by Elton John." Elton & Bernie were so honoured that they promised to write a song for Sinatra. A demo (1:56 in length) of "Remember" exists with Elton solo on piano and vocals; check YouTube to listen to it. The song ended up being performed by Frank Sinatra live in 1978. However, Frank never released it on record despite apparently recording it in July of 1977 at at TBS Studios in California.
"Remember" was officially released by Donatella Rettore on her ESTASI CLAMOROSA album in 1981 after Elton asked her to record it. The song clocked in at 4:10 and closed her album. It became a top 10 hit. Apparently Elton & Donatella became fans of one another. She stated that, at the time, she and Elton "passed several days just drinking beer and talking about music."
"Remember" does have that sad and lonely feel that filled parts of BLUE MOVES from 1976. It certainly would have fit on BLUE MOVES or A SINGLE MAN except that the latter album didn't feature any songs with Bernie's lyrics. It is listed as an outtake from the A SINGLE MAN sessions.
Hard to rate as it is only a part of the demo and it ends abruptly. It certainly has emotion and tugs at the heart. Nice song. Quite a history for a relatively little-known EJ / BT song.
Rating: 4 to 4 1/2 stars (This song got stuck in my head!)
