I have not much to say about this album because 90 % are short instrumental pieces and in addition there is only one regular song and one remix of it.
Some of the instrumentals have a nice overall look. I'll mention a few: "Take A Walk With Me", "Sarah Escapes", "Meet Christine", "Better Have A Gift", "Back To The Aquarium". The only regular song (full band + EJ) is nice, but could have been far better, especially as it is in the position to be in a lead role when marketing the album. The remix is not bad, but it's not very good either. Forgettable.
1. Driving Home **** 2. Driving To Universal ***½ 3. Driving To Jack's **** 4. Walk Of Shame ****½ 5. Better Have A Gift ****½ 6. The Wrong Gift *** 7. The Aquarium **** 8. Are We Laughing? **** 9. Take A Walk With Me ***** 10. What Should I Do? **** 11. Back To The Aquarium ****½ 12. Steven Redecorates **** 13. To The Guesthouse ***½ 14. The Cookie Factory **** 15. Multiple Personality **** 16. Sarah Escapes ****½ 17. Back To Paramount **** 18. Meet Christine ****½ 19. The Muse **** 20. The Muse [Remix] ****

THE MUSE:
I was actually pretty excited about the idea of Elton doing an album of primarily instrumental / orchestral stuff. I always loved "Tonight" and "Carla / Etude" so the idea of EJ venturing back to write piano and orchestra music was tempting. The result? Overly repetitive and extremely disappointing. It is understandable why he hasn't done this again. He should take a lesson from James Newton Howard who has mastered this craft. I guess Elton is at his best when inspired and maybe writing like this may have been too restricting and mechanical for him. Who knows. A very disappointing collection of tunes with only one vocal track penned by Elton & Bernie. No surprise that it didn't chart anywhere. I wouldn't recommend this album to anyone...that I like.

After the initial first plays, I *never* play this album. A couple of instrumentals are pretty good, and I did put 'The Muse' song on another cd, and like it quite well, so I'll give the album 2.5.

Doug The problem was that Elton kept the songs very short, and similar to each other. I know you don't agree with this, but I'll say it anyways: Billy Joel's classical album is very similar, the songs are just longer. But in the end there's not much creativity in them.

I bought Billy Joel's classical album, and it never did much for me at all.
