After Elton John, another studio album was released to fulfill the recording contract.
This is many fans' favorite, and no wonder why: The songs are very interesting from both lyrical and musical point of view.
I'll go to the individual track reviews. "Ballad Of A Well-Known Gun" is somewhat like a country rocker, and it succeeds to be such. It's not fast but is a really cool song despite that. "Come Down In Time" is a great ballad, but I don't like the chorus that much. Verses make it great though. "Country Comfort" is one of my favorites here and it's really relaxed country tune. Should have been released as a single, as it could have done well in the country chart. "Son Of Your Father", I'm not that excited of it but it doesn't sound bad either. "My Father's Gun" is a long, somewhat melancholic ballad that I long had a lyric problem as the character sounds too much willing to go to war. No it doesn't bother me. The second side starts with "Where To Now St. Peter?", which is a really exciting song. However the following track, "Love Song", is the weakest on this album. It just seems to be going nowhere. "Amoreena" is somehow wistful country tune. Not brilliant but not bad either. "Burn Down The Mission", the closer, got lots of energy in the outros and is really good otherwise as well.
And the bonus tracks: "Into The Old Man's Shoes" is really relaxed, great country tune. "Madman Across The Water" original version is a great track and succeeds better than "Grey Seal" from the Elton John album, as it's more polished and I really like the guitar in it. The only piano demo here, "Sisters Of The Cross", is strange and doesn't sound that great.
