Elton's first soundtrack album came straight after Tumbleweed Connection. With 17-11-70 it fulfilled the two album per year demand from his recording contract.
This soundtrack is not a favorite of mine, although it includes brilliant material.
The title track is a nice song, moderate lead single though. "Honey Roll" has a chorus that doesn't impress me that much. "Variation On Friends" is a nice instrumental. "Seasons" is one of the best ones here. With a really beautiful instrumental start, it emerges into a short ballad where music really meets the lyrics ("oh the winter's cold but I'm so warm with you"). "Variations..." is yet another nice tune, but it's not a proper song. "Can I Put You On?" rocks, and the outro reminds me of SNAFF, which means it's really energetic. "Michelle's Song" is one of the most beautiful and wonderful songs by Elton. "I Mean To Do..." is ok, not very good because it has voices from the film - not because it's not Elton, but because it's not good. "Four Moods" is the weakest track here, a classical piece that doesn't go anywhere. It's just long and boring. "Seasons Reprise" is a great cut of the original song.
Friends ****½
Honey Roll ****
Variation On Friends ****
Seasons *****+
Variation On Michelle's Song (A Day In The Country) ***½
Can I Put You On? *****
Michelle's Song *****+
I Meant To Do My Work Today (A Day In The Country) ***
Four Moods **½
Seasons Reprise *****
