Music: Elton John
Lyrics: Bernie Taupin
Piano and vocals: Elton John
Keyboards: Patrick Leonard
Guitars: Rusty Anderson
Bass: Paul Bushnell
Drums: Matt Chamberlain
Percussion: Jay Bellerose
String arrangement: Paul Buckmaster
Oh, it's carnival night
And they're stringing the lights around you
Hanging paper angels
Painting little devils on the roof
Oh the furnace wind
Is a flickering of wings about your face
In a cloud of incense
Yea, it smells like Heaven in this place
I can't eat, can't sleep
Still I hunger for you when you look at me
That face, those eyes
All the sinful pleasures deep inside
chorus:
Tell me how, you know now, the ways and means of getting in
Underneath my skin
Oh you were always my original sin
And tell me why I shudder inside every time we begin
This dangerous game
Oh you were always my original sin
A dream will fly
The moment that you open up your eyes
A dream is just a riddle
Ghosts from every corner of your life
Up in the balcony
All the Romeo's are bleeding for your hand
Blowing theater kisses
Reciting lines they don't understand
I can't eat, can't sleep
Still I hunger for you when you look at me
That face, those eyes
All the sinful pleasures deep inside
(repeat chorus)
(repeat chorus)

Brilliant song, mostly because of the lyrics though. 5+ stars.

"Original Sin" from SONGS FROM THE WEST COAST:
I really felt that this was a classic song...or IS a classic song. Had it been released in the 70s it would have either been considered a very strong album track or a possibly a successful single. It is too good of a song to be "lost" to the casual music fan...but it is.
Well written, performed, and produced. A warm beautiful and intelligent song. One of EJ & BT's better ones.

4.5 stars, and very close to a 5. This song was a Grammy nominated song, and deservedly so, though it could be the least well-known nominee of all time. It's about as good as the classic Elton John ballads got, though it's understated and doesn't have the big crescendo of some of his singles. It's more like Daniel or Your Song in overall tone and melody.

What impresses me about this one is that it IS just like a 70s singer songwriter song, just as good, just as real, but not like Elton's 70s songs. He can do anyone's style, often better than they themselves do it...
Yes rocketman, it has a sort of calm, "even" feel, never reaching some climax... and that's part of what makes it more like other 70s songwriters. Elton always built emotional intensity to a peak, and that peak is what seemed so "magical" and special about Elton. I keep thinking OS is more like James Taylor or Carole King, not sure they're the most appropriate examples.
