In 2011 Elton released a soundtrack, which was pretty unique - it included many original hits of his, and only two new songs, plus a remake of "Crocodile Rock" and a bunch of cast recordings. BUT, the problem is, for hardcore fans the package is not enough, because the hits are so overplayed and the new songs aren't very good.
Anyway, I'll review this album but only the tracks that are new!
The album starts with a single, "Hello Hello". That's unfortunately a weak song, and the problem is the chorus - it just doesn't work, and there ain't a great hook in it. Elton was humiliated by Madonna during that time as well because of that song (clarify more, if you know!). Then comes the new version of "Crocodile Rock", which is only a shadow of the old classic. The arrangement simply doesn't work and the backing vocals don't work (they irritate). "Love Builds A Garden" jumps in after track number four, and that is a better attempt than the startoff track. Still, it's far away from a great song. About the rest, I will just shortly comment: I like "Dandelions", but "Terrafirminator" is real trash.
Here are the track scores:
1. Hello Hello ***½ 2. Crocodile Rock [With Nelly Furtado] **** 5. Love Builds A Garden ****½ 10. Gnomeo And Juliet ***½ 11. Dandelions **** 12. Bennie And The Bunnies **½ 13. Terrafirminator *½ 14. The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room ***

GNOMEO AND JULIET:
This 2011 release didn't strike a chord with me but, then again, I am not the target audience for music to a Disney soundtrack of this nature. I was a bit surprised that it didn't chart anywhere as a soundtrack. "Hello, Hello" is alright but not really a standout. The remakes of songs like "Crocodile Rock" are fine but not of interest to me. Elton's then current band (Davey, Nigel, Guy, Bob, and John) did the work in the studio for this album.
Maybe children, the target audience, enjoyed the songs on GNOMEO AND JULIET but nothing like the success generated by the songs on THE LION KING soundtrack. Despite those songs being geared for a youthful audience, there were countless adults who really got into "I Can Feel the Love Tonight" and "The Circle of Life" and Hakuna Matata." The same just can't be said as much about GNOMEO AND JULIET.
