I'm weary and I'm staying up late
And the rain hits my roof so hard
You know I'm no longer thirty these days
I'm happy to play one or two hands of cards
I hate flies in the kitchen buzzing
Disturbing the peace I've found
Fortune and fame is so fleeting these days
I'm happy to say I'm amazed that I'm still around
chorus:
And the weight of the world is off my back
When we fell, we got up
And crawled out the cracks
Excuse me if I take some comfort in that
Happy today, happy to play
With the weight of the world off my back
Humidity hangs like a curtain
Oh it fogs up my glasses sometimes
You know I've still got my eyesight these days
I'm happy to see a sunset instead of a line
(repeat chorus)
There's a long list of names that I don't recall
Even though my memory's good
The rain washed away the lemons and weeds
When the weight of the world weighed more than it should
I hate flies in the kitchen buzzing
Disturbing the peace I've found
Fortune and fame is so fleeting these days
I'm happy to say I'm amazed that I'm still around
(repeat chorus)
I'm happy today, happy to play
With the weight of the world off my back

I've always liked this opener, it's not an energetic or dramatic opening for the album but it's still excellent. 5 stars.

"Weight of the World" from PEACHTREE ROAD:
An album which I have tried so hard to enjoy but stylistically it is not my cup of tea. Regardless, "Weight of the World" features a solid Bernie lyric and the song sounds relaxed and peaceful with good vocals from Elton particularly in the verses.
It is somewhere between 3 1/2 and 4 stars but not quite the upper end of this range for me. It did come over fairly well on the PEACHTREE ROAD tour back in 2004-05.
Rating: 3 1/2 stars

One of the better ones, but still disturbing with its sentiment of just relaxing and not trying so hard anymore. This was the first thing released after the line in the sand statement I think, and in song 1 he seems to be taking it back. The whole album has a resigned, unambitious air to it... Yet, this has more feeling than most of PR.
