Electric guitar: Davey Johnstone
Drums: Nigel Olsson
Orchestral arrangements: Del Newman
Backing vocals: Dee Murray, Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson
Some punk with a shotgun killed young Danny Bailey
In cold blood, in the lobby of a downtown motel
Killed him in anger, a force he couldn't handle
Helped pull the trigger that cut short his life
And there's not many knew him the way that we did
Sure enough he was a wild one, but then aren't most hungry kids
chorus:
Now it's all over Danny Bailey
And the harvest is in
Dillinger's dead
I guess the cops won again
Now it's all over Danny Bailey
And the harvest is in
We're running short of heroes back up here in the hills
Without Danny Bailey we're gonna have to break up our stills
So mark his grave well `cause Kentucky loved him
Born and raised a proper, I guess life just bugged him
And he found faith in danger, a lifestyle he lived by
A running gun youngster in a sad restless age
(repeat chorus)

"The Ballad of Danny Bailey (1909-1934)" from GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD:
One of Elton's all-time best album tracks. Great cinematic lyric from Bernie. The extended piano outro by Elton is superb. Del Newman's orchestral outro also is superb. The band was so tight and on top of their game. Elton had so many classic album tracks such as this one. Too bad he (mostly) stopped playing them live. The world has forgotten or doesn't know of all these true gems. None of them even showed up on the recent DIAMONDS collection. "Victim of Love" did...
Rating: 5 stars

5 stars...a classic, and in my Top 10 or 20 favorite songs. The instrumental outro is one of the best ever. The backing vocals by Davey, Dee and Nigel are first-rate. A jaunty, somewhat bouncy tune about a young gun in the old West is very fitting on the GBYBR album, which featured several such songs with cinematic themes. Not to mention it contributes mightily to one of the best album sides (GBYBR Side 3) in Elton's catalog.

I'm not a believer in a 5-plus rating. I prefer to say that 5 is the ultimate. I recall a past thread where I may have stated otherwise but I'd prefer to keep it simpler.

rocketman:
I try to rate the songs consistently and with meaning. I look at a 3 as an average to good song, a 4 as a good to very good song, and 5 and above as exceptional songs. I have very rarely given a 5+ but have done so when I feel that the song is a true classic song of which there are few; something like "Rocket Man."
It isn't always easy being fair with the ratings but I try. I know that EJ has done songs that many people like but for some reason I can't stand ("Country Comfort") but then there are songs that I love that most fans can't stand. We all have reasons for liking and not liking certain songs; music can be very personal to each of us. Either way, I still try to accept the song and rate it fairly in these polls; to accept them for their unique merit.
Keep giving the ratings that you feel are right for you. These are fun polls, anyway!

My ratings have a meaning similar to yours. 5 is, of course excellent and pretty much flawless. 4 is a solid, Good song, with a flaw or two. 3 is passable, but with marked flaws. 2 has serious flaws but might have some redeeming virtues, and 1 obviously is a poor song. the .5's are, understandably, a blend between the whole number ratings. 4.5, for example, is an excellent song that just doesn't quite reach the highest standard for whatever reason.
