I don't understand the purpose of these additional parts. Yeah, maybe the extended version is good to have, but instrumentals? No thanks. 2½ stars.

"Act of War - Part 4" from the ICE ON FIRE sessions.
Released as a 12" EP single, "Act of War 3" and "Act of War 4" failed to chart. The original "Act of War - Part 1" with R&B singer Millie Jackson did reach #11 in Ireland and #32 in the UK. Originally, Elton had planned for Tina Turner to do the duet version but, apparently, she rejected it because of the song's mood. The song, not included on the original album version of ICE ON FIRE, was a bonus track on the CD and on the 1992 remaster where a slightly altered vocal mix exists.
"Act of War - Part 4" is an incredibly rapid intense instrumental from Elton. Give him credit for stepping outside the box musically. It is my favourite of the first four parts. The song is "very busy" and the single "Act of War - Part 1" comes across as a bit noisy as a result of the mix and the vocals. "Part 4" (and all parts) has energy and is aggressive and is really unlike anything Elton had written before. The dance remixes really weren't overly danceable but nonetheless were somewhat exciting and saw EJ venture into somewhat new sounds.
If I remember correctly, there are 6 parts (!) to this song and it was either "Part 5" or "Part 6" that was my favourite; a long instrumental version, I believe. There were countless releases of the various "Act of War" songs on 7" and 12" vinyl in 1985. Time to go into my storage unit to check...
Rating: 3 1/2 stars

I recall hearing this a long time ago. I think it was a bside or something on vinyl. From what I recall it was pretty good and energetic.. I'll have to look for it on you tube.

Parts 3 and 4 didn't interest me. The song itself never interested me, until parts 5 and 6 came along, where it was all warped far enough that it started to become something. This is reflected in the cover, where the lyrics are distorted so much they're unreadable! Parts 5 and 6 were not released in the US.
