Music: Elton John
Lyrics: Tim Rice
From the day we arrive on the planet
And blinking, step into the sun
There's more to be seen than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be done
Some say eat or be eaten
Some say live and let live
But all are agreed as they join the stampede
You should never take more than you give
In the circle of life
It's the wheel of fortune
It's the leap of faith
It's the band of hope
Till we find our place
On the path unwinding
In the circle, the circle of life
Some of us fall by the wayside
And some of us soar to the stars
And some of us sail through our troubles
And some have to live with the scars
There's far too much to take in here
More to find than can ever be found
But the sun rolling high through the sapphire sky
Keeps great and small on the endless round

It's an old fella, one of the songs from his GH 1970-2002 which was my introduction to Elton. I think it's better than CYFTLT, because it doesn't sound corny.
5 stars.

"Circle of Life" from THE LION KING:
A very successful endeavour by Elton and lyricist Tim Rice as they ventured into animated film together. They had initially worked on the song "Legal Boys" from 1982's JUMP UP! album. Writing and recording for "Circle of Life" started in 1993-94 and the single was released in the summer of 1994. It reached #2 in Switzerland, #3 in Canada, #3 in Sweden as well as #1 on Canada's AC chart and #2 on the AC chart in the USA. The song, along with "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," propelled THE LION KING soundtrack to an extraordinary Diamond (10X platinum) certification in the USA and Canada and also propelled the album to sell over 1 million vinyl units!
Lyricist Tim Rice said that it took only 1 1/2 hours for Elton to write what he called a "stunning demo" for "Circle of Life." It was eventually nominated for Best Song at the 1994 Academy Awards. It is a really strong song that builds and then gently slips away. Elton was clearly at a prolific time in his career. Fresh off of coming clean from his multiple addictions and the subsequent multi-platinum selling album THE ONE (1992) Elton then undertook writing what would be MADE IN ENGLAND and the songs for THE LION KING. The release and success of THE LION KING delayed the release of MADE IN ENGLAND until 1995. A strong creative stretch for Elton. Elton's focus and energies were creating lots of strong music. In recent years Elton would end his "Million Dollar Piano" shows in Las Vegas with a powerful version of "Circle of Life."

5 stars...A song that exemplifies Elton's skill in creating the washing crescendo that can elevate a song and create a deep emotional response. When I listen to this song, it stirs emotions, and that's what music is supposed to do. Elton's vocals sound as 'big' as the occasion he was trying to create. One of Elton's best post-70's 'power' ballads, approaching sons like The One and Believe from the same general time period in terms of quality.
