Have you seen the North
That cold grey place
Don't want its shadow anymore
On my face
A man grows bitter
We're a bitter race
Some of us never get to see
A better place
In the Northern Skies
There was a steel cloud
It used to follow me around
But I don't see it now
There's a farm in the rain
And a little farmhouse
There were a young man's eyes
Looking south
The North was my mother
But I no longer need her
You trade your roots and your dust
For a face in the river
And a driven rain that washes you
To a different shore
There's a North in us all
But my North can't hold me anymore

One of the many winners from The One. I remember Elton likes this one a lot! 5 stars.

"The North" from THE ONE:
An interesting song from EJ & BT on 1992's THE ONE album. The song can be about a particular geographic place or about a spiritual or emotional place in one's life. As the lyric suggests, the song could be about moving from a place with "steel clouds" and "rain" to a "better place" which is what Elton had done between 1991 and 1992 after overcoming his multiple addictions.
Elton debuted "The North" at the Dee Murray solo benefit concerts in Nashville in March of 1992. Dee, Elton's long-time bassist, had just passed away from a stroke related to his on-going battle with skin cancer.
Elton would sporadically play "The North" in concert in 1992, 1993, and 1994. A song that might have benefitted from a slightly more organic approach, "The North" still sounds pretty good today. Nice piano and vocal from EJ and bass from Pino Palladino.
Rating: 4 1/2 stars

It is cold up North and I like warmer weather so I live in the South. But there is beauty up North so its nice to visit but I don't want to live there. I like the song, Not my favorite but still worthy of 5 stars.

3.5 stars...on an otherwise very good to excellent record, this song is a low point for me. It just doesn't hit the mark that so many of the other songs from The One manage to attain, though it's certainly not bad.
