RECORD STORE DAY 2019:
On April 13, 2019 Elton will be releasing a special vinyl album from his and Ray Cooper's famous tour in Russia in 1979; the double vinyl album is called ELTON JOHN - LIVE FROM MOSCOW. The album has been remastered and captures those famous shows from 1979 when it was extremely rare to see a Western pop artist play in the USSR.
Since vinyl has become an important growth market for the music business, RECORD STORE DAY has become a big day for artists to release new, old, and never before released albums. Last year Elton re-released his & Pnau's GOOD MORNING TO THE NIGHT album. The year before was the 11-17-70 expanded double album. These releases are usually ONLY available from actual record stores and not from online stores. Occasionally, the releases may show up online later on if they didn't sell out in the actual stores.
Good to know that LIVE FROM MOSCOW has been remastered for this vinyl release; the sound quality could be quite good, as a result. The concert date is apparently May 28, 1979 and the 2019 release is apparently on clear vinyl.

Funny, I was listening to this concert again recently. 1979-2019. 40 years... I love how those shows sound. The version of Sixty Years On is amazing on this recording.

Rocket Man:
Yeah, I recently bought the Elton in Russia DVD of the 1979 concert after owning the originally released video decades ago! The DVD is good with lots of historical footage of St. Petersburg and Moscow plus a sampling of songs. Agreed, "Sixty Years On" is superb. I am looking to having that and "Rocket Man" and "Better off Dead" and others on the new 2019 vinyl. Even "Part Time Love" sounded great. I really hope that "Where To Now St. Peter" and "Song For Guy" are included on the new 2019 vinyl release.

Doug:
Absolutely! Even "Part Time Love" manages to catch the interest in this (faster) version. This DVD is one more proof that Elton's songs don't need too much extra arrangements or adornments. It's also interesting to have coupled "Funeral For A Friend" with "Tonight" instead of "Love Lies Bleeding"!🙂

Rocket Man:
That "Tonight" and "Funeral For A Friend" coupling is a real highlight. My first Elton concert (with Ray Cooper) was 1979 and those two songs were superb together and a great way to introduce Ray to the audience 1/2 way through the 3-hour long concert. I would assume that they will be on the new LIVE FROM MOSCOW record. It was nice to hear EJ's falsetto on that tour.

Doug:
I wish I would have been around. This period of time seems to have been such an interesting one, for those who like to focus on Elton's piano playing. Not forgetting those high notes he could, then, still reach. I actually love the feeling on the songs of this time where you can really hear his piano playing. Albums like A Single Man, The Fox or Jump Up! are so underrated in that respect, in the sense that plenty of the songs from those type of albums would fit perfectly in a solo concert, without all of the orchestra. Just the piano. 🙂

newloneranger:
I have never seen Elton's concerts from Russia in 1979 on CD. It is likely that there are bootlegs of the concert but nothing was officially released. This new LIVE FROM MOSCOW release for Record Store Day 2019 is vinyl only. It is a special promotion worldwide to promote vinyl and to get people back into record stores. It has become a major success as most record stores have huge line-ups on these days. April 13 is the day for 2019.
Rocket Man:
Someone has uploaded onto YouTube the entire Boston concert from 1979. It is amazingly clear for the time and is well worth listening to. "Rocket Man" plus "Funeral For A Friend / Tonight" are the highlights.

Doug:
Yes, I have heard both the entire Boston and Russia concerts. I think the Russian bootleg has been uploaded on YouTube too. I wish he had played "Georgia" because it's a favourite of mine from A Single Man. Georgia and Shooting Star. 🙂

Rocket Man:
I never saw either "Georgia" or "Shooting Star" from A SINGLE MAN played live in concert. Apparently EJ did play "Georgia" at least once in 1978 and "Shooting Star" was played a bit in both 1978 and early 1979. I, too, was hoping to see more than one song from A SINGLE MAN when I saw Elton & Ray in 1979. "Song For Guy" was the first encore - beautiful! I guess since A SINGLE MAN was not a big hit album Elton was reluctant to play much from it a year after its release. "Part Time Love" was played earlier in the tour.

Yea I've seen this show years ago, I think there was a video or something released a long time ago. It may even have been on TV but I forgot. From what I remember it was a interesting show. Too bad its not being released on CD. I don't have a record player anymore so I'm not gonna waste my money.

newloneranger:
The Elton John & Ray Cooper concert in Moscow was on radio first, then on TV, then on video, and a few years ago re-released on DVD. It is called "To Russia...With Elton." It is still available on DVD. The upcoming 2019 Record Store Day vinyl is going to have many more songs than either the original video or the DVD. The good news is that the album has been remastered so there could be the best sound quality yet for these songs.

Doug:
Well in France A Single Man was a hit. It peaked at #2 and by the end of the year it was still #6 ... So he could have played "Georgia" and "Shooting Star"!! ☺️
I did re-watch "To Russia... with Elton!" not along ago. 🙂 A very pleasant documentary/concert.
newloneranger:
Yes, as Doug said, you can probably still find the DVD. It's one that I have. I don't even remember when they re-released it but I bought it then. It was years ago already but it is certainly still possible to find it. 🙂
