Music: Elton John
Lyrics: Bernie Taupin
I stumbled down 5th Avenue
In the winter time, 1982
No heavy coat, thin pair of shoes
In the rush hour crowd, on 5th Avenue
I thought I saw someone I knew
Turned out to be no one but you
Something borrowed, something blue
Ducked in a doorway on 5th Avenue
chorus:
All my crimes come back to haunt me
Every building seems to judge
Standing tall and looking down
Like fingers pointing from above
On 5th Avenue, on 5th Avenue
The party's over on 5th Avenue
Fortune finds the chosen few
Fools just find someone like you
Build a bank, or you buy a zoo
Monkeys and money on 5th Avenue
Snow falls on 5th Avenue
Your old man is on the evening news
Hard to believe how far he flew
Down, all the way down to 5th Avenue
(repeat chorus)
(repeat chorus)

One of the three leftovers from TDB. I've always liked this song, and it indeed sounds a lot like "Burning Buildings".
5 stars.

"5th Avenue" from THE DIVING BOARD - Limited Edition:
A nice piano-centered song from Elton's organic THE DIVING BOARD album. A T-Bone Burnett produced album, it was designed to focus on piano, drums, and bass. "5th Avenue" didn't make the album proper or even some of the deluxe versions but did show up as a bonus track on limited editions. The song may have been as strong or stronger than some of the tracks which did appear on THE DIVING BOARD. Elton was excited about the album. Between EJ and the record company, the album's release was held back a few times; once so that Elton could write new songs to create a balance of songs that he thought was necessary for the overall sound of the record.
Rating: 4 to 4 1/2 stars

5 stars...I wish this song could somehow have made the album proper, though it wouldn't be the first time that material that was at least as good and perhaps better than the material included on an album was left off.

This song demands to be right before Dream 3. It needs to be there. The only reason it's not on the album is this marketing ploy of holding back a great song for a special edition, to sell people a second version too I guess.
Monkeys and money! Ha.

4.5 Great song. Better than 90% of the album.
