It's closing time the boys are all together at the bar
Staring in their glasses
Looks like another layoff at the yard
Yesterday I heard union hall come down
They hit it with a wrecking ball
And they try but nothing changes in this town
Cap in hand stood in line
Your family ties are the chains that bind
The endless wheel goes round and round
Chances are you'll never leave this town
Oh oh no
Like a river now the empty streets are flooded out with rain
It's falling on the playground
While the kids get wet playing the same old games
Locked away so many things remind them of war
They tap the pavement with their canes
The good old days ain't so good no more

"This Town" from ICE ON FIRE: A solid upbeat horn supported album track from Elton's 1985 release of ICE ON FIRE. As "good" as the song is on the studio album, "This Town" excelled live. Elton's live piano combined with the horns lifted the song into a better place. The production on most of ICE ON FIRE seemed leaden to me. Really enjoy the keyboard sound on this one; sounds a bit like a clavinet but not. Either way, it was a pleasure to hear it live on tour in 1986. Elton had, again, changed up the band with ICE ON FIRE by dropping Nigel & Dee for the second time. Charlie Morgan was now the drummer and Paul Westwood did the bass duties. David Paton played bass live on the 1985-86 ICE ON FIRE tour. Check out the live performance on "The Tube" from 1985 which was kindly uploaded onto YouTube for our dancing & dining pleasure: www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAN8WP3l9c8Rating: 4 1/2 stars Doug

5 stars...though I agree with DougS, the studio rendition is good for a 5 rating. It's one of the better songs of the period, the decade probably, though as Doug said, it really took off during live performances. I witnessed one during the '86 Tour, then when I went back for another show a week later in the same venue, the song was, to my disappointment, left off the setlist.

5 Too much fun to be rated lower than that.
