I like the polished studio cut more. This live version isn't as bad as some others on the album.
4½ stars.

"Better Off Dead" Live - CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY Deluxe Edition:
Elton debuted CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY, the entire album, in London at Wembley Stadium in June of 1975 and "Better Off Dead" was one of those songs. Elton's vocal phrasing of the song is quite good. The band, however, is not the one used on record. Both Nigel and Dee had just been fired or relieved of duty and a larger more rocking band put in their place. The percussion is strong. There is a bit of a difference with the backing vocals compared to the studio version. The result, overall, is good. The studio version of "Better Off Dead" is superb and this live version is pretty solid as well.
Rating: 4 1/2 to 5 stars

4 stars...Possibly the performance on this album that's most like the studio version. Most of the other songs differ significantly, but either way, it's a good song. I heard this live during the 1986-87 Tour.
