Yesterday you came to lift me up
As light as straw and brittle as a bird
Today I weigh less than a shadow on the wall
Just one more whisper of a voice unheard
Tomorrow leave the windows open
As fear grows please hold me in your arms
Won't you help me if you can to shake this anger
I need your gentle hands to keep me calm
`Cause I never thought I'd lose
I only thought I'd win
I never dreamed I'd feel
This fire beneath my skin
I can't believe you love me
I never thought you'd come
I guess I misjudged love
Between a father and his son
Things we never said come together
The hidden truth no longer haunting me
Tonight we touched on the things that were never spoken
That kind of understanding sets me free

En excellent ending for The One. Funny he starts the word "yesterday" in the exact form with The Beatles classic. 5 stars.

5+ one of the most sad and most beautiful songs ever... to me Elton's most sad song. Also, vocals on this one are brilliant.

"The Last Song" from THE ONE:
"The Last Song" from Elton's 1992 release of THE ONE includes a superb lyric from Bernie about a father struggling to come to grips with the sexuality of his gay son who is dying of AIDS. The song was apparently originally titled "Song For 1992." Bernie faxed the lyrics to Elton shortly after his good friend Freddie Mercury died of AIDS. Elton said that he "was crying all the time as I wrote the music."
"The Last Song" was the 2nd or 3rd song (depending where you lived) to be released as a single from THE ONE. It went #2 in Poland, #3 on the Canada AC chart, #7 in Canada, #21 in the UK, and #23 in the US. It also ended up in Canada's year-end Top Singles chart for both 1992 and 1993.
Elton played "The Last Song" live consistently between 1992 and 1999 but, apparently, hasn't played it live in this millennium. It was usually reserved to be played as the last song of the concert. One of their best songs of the decade.
Rating: 5 stars

Important subject, a lot of people love this one and find it meaningful, but to me the tune is melodramatic and trite. I skip it.

Good song, great vocals. I'm glad it really wasn't his last song. 5 stars

It's like those musical songs we make fun of sometimes. Too "precious" for me... Ta DA!! Here I AM, being ever so EMOTIONAL!! Conquer The Sun strikes me the same way, though that's also very popular among fans.

4 stars...Certainly a weighty, emotional tune, which makes me wonder why I hardly ever listen to it. It almost seems too weighty, perhaps, I don't really know. That said, it has definite merit, and makes an important point.
