Weaker than the original, like most of the tracks from the show.
4 stars.

"Tower of Babel" Live from Wembley Stadium 1975 from CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY Deluxe Edition:
Elton had just unceremoniously let long-time bandmates Nigel Olsson and Dee Murray go and assembled a new band with Roger Pope and Kenny Passarelli replacing Nigel & Dee plus he added Caleb Quaye and Jeff Baxter (from Steely Dan and The Doobie Brothers) on guitar as well as James Newton Howard on keyboards. Davey & Ray were kept in the band. Backing vocalists were also added for the concert. This was the band that played the just-released CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY in its entirety at Wembley Stadium London in June of 1975. These were the first live performances of the album. The songs were actually a year old by concert time; they had been recorded in July of 1974 at Caribou Studios immediately after mostly being written on the SS France. Too bad that Nigel and Dee, who contributed so much to the recording of the album, were not to debut the songs live including "Tower of Babel."
Elton wrote and recorded the songs for CAPTAIN FANTASTIC AND THE BROWN DIRT COWBOY in the running sequence of the album. He played them at Wembley in the same order - playing all 10 songs. "Tower of Babel" came off decently live. Lots of guitars. Despite Elton celebrating the album with 30th anniversary concerts in New York, Boston, and Atlanta in 2005 he did not play "Tower of Babel" (and "Writing") at those shows. "Tower of Babel" was only played live 1975.
Apparently both EJ and Bernie have said that "Tower of Babel" was written about what they called the money grubbing execs in the music publishing business. The songwriters are attacking those people who were obstacles to them & others and were not concerned about the art - the music. Bernie stated that "Tower of Babel" was "about sharks in the doorway...nipping at our heals, looking for blood."

4.5 stars...Several of the performances on this live album are at least as good as their studio renditions, and this is no exception. Slightly accelerated pacing seemed to work on these songs. In fact, when I listen to this album and then listen to the studio versions, the studio renditions seem to almost plod along a bit too slowly.
