Music: Elton John
Lyrics: Bernie Taupin
Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your name
chorus:
And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did
Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died
Oh the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Marilyn was found in the nude
(repeat chorus)
Goodbye Norma Jean
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
Goodbye Norma Jean
From the young man in the 22nd row
Who sees you as something more than sexual
More than just our Marilyn Monroe
(repeat chorus)

Great version! I'm not sure if I like this even more than the original band version.
5 stars.

"Candle in the Wind" Acoustic Mix from GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD - 30th Anniversary Edition and from ELTON JOHN REMIXED:
In 2003, a 30th anniversary edition of GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD appeared with this new acoustic version of "Candle in the Wind" as a bonus track. Shortly after, a 5-song EP of Elton songs was remixed; two versions of "Are You Ready For Love?" and one of "Rocket Man" and "Song For Guy" and this acoustic-only mix of "Candle in the Wind." This "Candle in the Wind" mix has only Elton's lead vocal, Davey's acoustic guitar, and Nigel, Dee, and Davey on backing vocals. Remix producer Greg Penny removed all other instruments and also removed the double-tracking of Elton's lead vocal.
This acoustic version is quite beautiful. "Candle in the Wind" excels with full band, piano-only, and with this acoustic guitar-only version. The melody and lyric are so strong that it shines any which way. Too bad that Elton didn't try it live this way at least once. With just vocal and acoustic guitar there is a real intimacy.
Rating: 5 to 5 1/2 stars

4 stars...I agree with DougS, I think this would make for an interesting live rendition. As it is, it's quite good on the Remixed disc, and I'd actually rate it at 4.25 stars.
