Music: Elton John
Lyrics: Tim Rice
It's so strange he doesn't show me more affection than he needs
Almost formal, too respectful, never takes romantic leads
There are times when I imagine I'm not always on his mind
He's not thinking what I'm thinking, always half a step behind
Always half a step behind
I'm in every kind of trouble, can't you tell, just look at me
Half ecstatic, half dejected, all in all I'm all at sea
Easy turns I thought I wanted, fill me now with chilling dread
You can never know the chaos, of a life turned on its head
Of a life turned on its head
Take a little time to panic, shake off your complacent state
I know all I ever wished to, of a life destroyed by fate
It's so strange you never notice anything but where you are
Step outside your gleaming prison, or is that a step too far
Or is that a step too far

Very good. But production-wise I prefer the finished product.
4½ stars.

"A Step Too Far" - AIDA Demo:
In 1999, Elton and Tim Rice released a star-studded album which accompanied the AIDA musical. The actual album version of "A Step Too Far" featured Elton with Heather Headley and Sherie Scott. The "demo" has Elton singing solo and playing piano with partial supporting instrumentation. Most of the AIDA demos are worth a listen to and many come across more effectively than the star-studded album. "A Step Too far" was one of the songs that excelled with Heather Headley & Sherie Scott accompanying Elton. Both versions have their respective charms.
The released AIDA album didn't generate a lot of chart success; #41 in the US and #29 in the UK.
Still, the "demos" for the most part are well worth a listen as is "A Step Too Far."
Rating: 4 to 4 1/2 stars
