New Elton music; artists covering EJ & BT Classics: There will be two new albums featuring existing Elton music on April 6: 1. REVAMP: Popular artists covering EJ & BT classics. 2. RESTORATION: Country artists covering EJ & BT songs. Here is the REVAMP info from eltonjohn.com: www.eltonjohn.com/stories/revamp-released-april-6A bit of the TWO ROOMS approach going on here. Thoughts? Doug

I wanted Elton to do a cover album, not others to cover him!

Mixed feelings. I think some of the songs will be interesting, such as Don't Let The Sun...by Miley Cyrus and Your Song by Lady Gaga, and possibly Someone Saved...by Mumford & Sons.
On the other hand, who in the world is Q-Tip? I guess it's some hip-hop group. Whatever. And do we really need yet another rendition of Candle In The Wind? (Ed Sheeran).

Do we really need a compilation like this (after an original one) when there are TONS of rare stuff that could be released...?!?!?! For example, deluxe editions with demos, unreleased songs, a box of B-Sides (Rare Masters II) and things like these?!?!
Anyway...Money saved. Wake me up when good stuff is released...

AGR82:
Long-time fans like most of here would rather have those rarities, wouldn't we? I sure would prefer them. I doubt the average music fan has much interest in Elton rarities, however. The soon to be released REVAMP is already top 30 on Amazon's sales charts in the USA & UK.
We also know how much Elton likes working with other musicians and the link he has with new music; he'd much rather have something NEW (albeit, covers) out there than dug up old and forgotten gems. The music buying public will recognize the majority of the song titles on these two new releases; hits, most of them and that is what sells for Elton these days...hits.
Remember that good RARE MASTERS release from 1992-93? It came out when Elton was selling his best since the mid-70s and it still didn't even chart. That probably scared Elton and his record companies from ever going back down that "rarities" path. Too bad. AGR82, I am with you on this one. We can continue to hope...

More regurgitation of hits, which are actually my least favorite EJ songs.

Two Rooms part II. I don't like album versions.

Now that they are released, what songs do you like from REVAMP and from RESTORATION?
On my behalf, I am not as much a fan a country or southern-nuanced music as other genres so I am not yet a fan of most of RESTORATION.
Regarding REVAMP, there are three songs that I really am impressed with:
* "We All Fall in Love Sometimes" by Coldplay * "Your Song" by Lady Gaga * "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" by Q-Tip featuring Demi Lovato
These are the only three at this point that I would purchase from iTunes. If I feel that I begin to enjoy more of the songs then I may buy the album but I don't think that will happen. One thing that I noticed with much of the music is that there isn't the true musicianship and excellent instrument playing that characterized the originals. I do feel that the Lady Gaga and Coldplay versions have a real honest heartfelt intensity to them.
Your thoughts about REVAMP and RESTORATION?

I've listened a few clips of the REVAMP disc, and all I can say is... I don't like them!! Waste of time. It's the modern pop arrangement & production that ruins most of Elton's classics. Take SSMLT as an example - featuring a complete joke as a replacement of Elton's brilliant piano riff, drums without muscles, singing without passion, it's just... nonsense. The most irritating is the lack the consistency of the original version, as there are very irritating pauses when drums disappear and all one can hear is cacophony - ESPECIALLY in the end where we should hear a glorious, catchy and magnificent conclusion.
Two Rooms is heaven when compared to this mediocrity. I'm getting even more and more worried about what will music be like for the future generations.

I might reconsider these records after watching the Grammy Salute last night. The performances were largely very good to excellent. Miranda Lambert and Little Big Town did very nice renditions of My Father's Gun and Rocket Man, respectively.

I think the Restoration album is fantastic. Can't stop listening to it. The Revamped album is mostly forgettable. I do like Miley Cirus, Ed Sheeran, Florence and the Machine and Queens of the Stone Age tracks but the rest make my ears bleed.
I also surprised to see them both doing fairly well on the HitsDailyDouble chart sitting at #3 and #4. I'm sure they will drop a little once streaming is included but I thought these would both be ignored. Not so apparently.

REVAMP & RESTORATION:
Yeah, those two new releases plus DIAMONDS shot to the Top 5 on Amazon.com after the CBS TV show last night with those many artists playing Elton's songs in concert. Even the 1974 GREATEST HITS is #18! Amazing what a little TV exposure does.
I still like a few tracks from REVAMP & RESTORATION but hoping I'll start to enjoy others as well...

REVAMP & RESTORATION:
These are #1 and #2 respectively on Canada's Amazon sales chart today. I, too, am surprised how well these are selling.

On Billboard's Hot 200, Diamonds is now 72, up from 79. I don't think Revamp and Restoration have been out long enough yet to have been counted.
It's funny seeing old albums re-enter the chart. The Essential Billy Joel, for example, is at #118.
